Carmen A. Traywick, MD

Dr. Traywick is a board certified dermatologist, and a graduate of Emory Medical School in Atlanta, Georgia and completed her Internship and Dermatology Residency at Emory University School of Medicine. She founded May River Dermatology with her husband in 2009.  She has published several scholarly articles in national dermatologic journals on skin cancer and rare skin diseases. During her training, Dr. Traywick was confronted with the most complex and challenging dermatologic conditions. She has been trained by experts in the field of skin cancer surgery, cutaneous lymphoma, and autoimmune blistering diseases. She also trained under the guidance of several private practice doctors in the Atlanta area who are nationally-renowned for their expertise in cosmetic dermatology.

Dr. Traywick currently teaches medical students and residents Dermatologic surgery skills. She has lectured upcoming Dermatologists at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston. Dr. Traywick supports several charities including the Boys and Girls Club, the American Heart Association of Hilton Head, and many educational programs which teach children the importance of Sun Safety. Dr. Traywick enjoys spending her free time traveling with her husband, Bernie, and their three girls.


Dale Sarradet, MD

Dr. Sarradet joined the practice of May River Dermatology in 2014. Prior to joining the practice, Dr. Sarradet served as the Residency Program Director for the Department of Dermatology and as the head of Mohs Surgery at Emory Healthcare in Atlanta, one of the nation’s top academic medical centers. In his positions at Emory Department of Dermatology, Dr. Sarradet trained both new Dermatologists and Mohs Surgeons as they began their careers in Dermatology. Dr. Sarradet is a Board-Certified Dermatologist, as well as a Board-Certified Fellowship Trained Micrographic Dermatologic Surgeon.

His education includes medical school at Texas Tech University Health Science Center, and an internship in General Surgery at the Medical College of Georgia in Augusta, Georgia. Residency was completed at Emory University School of Medicine in Atlanta, Georgia, and after that he completed a Fellowship in Mohs Surgery with Dr. David Goldberg in New York and New Jersey. Dr. Sarradet is a member of many professional organizations, including the American Board of Dermatology and the American College of Mohs Surgeons.


Carrie Hall, MD

Dr. Hall is a board certified Dermatologist, and a graduate of The Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences in Bethesda, Maryland. She completed her internship at US Naval Hospital Portsmouth, Virginia and her residency in Dermatology at The National Naval Medical Center, Bethesda, Maryland.  During her training, Dr. Hall studied under some of the most renowned teachers in Dermatology at the National Institutes of Health as well as The University of Pennsylvania, in addition to military medicine specialists.  She spent most of her early medical career as a US Naval Officer and Diving Medical officer, serving operational units in Guam as well as being involved and published in combat casualty care research, before finishing her time in active military service as the Chief of Medicine and Dermatology at Camp LeJeune Naval Hospital in North Carolina.

Dr. Hall is a fellow of the American Academy of Dermatology, as well as member of the American Society of Dermatologic Surgery and several other professional societies. Her position at May River Dermatology will be to provide the full spectrum of Medical Dermatology care, and to include in-office procedures and cosmetics. She enjoys spending her free time with her family and friends as well as running, sailing, and traveling. She will be seeing patients in the Hilton Head and Bluffton offices.


Joseph McGowan IV, MD

Dr. McGowan is a board-certified dermatologist and ACMS fellowship-trained Mohs micrographic surgeon. He is a graduate of the University of South Carolina School of Medicine. He completed his dermatology residency at the Medical University of South Carolina. After residency, Dr. McGowan completed his fellowship in Mohs micrographic skin cancer surgery at the Dayton Skin Surgery Center. He has authored numerous articles and has lectured at many national professional meetings on skin cancer and reconstructive techniques.

Dr. McGowan is also an accomplished singer, songwriter, and keyboardist whose music draws from many genres, including classical, jazz, bluegrass, gospel, R&B, and country. He was classically trained in piano performance and attended the South Carolina Governor’s School for the Arts during high school. He is an active member of the Nashville Songwriter’s Association International (NSAI) and National Association of Recording Industry Professionals (NARIP). His debut album is Dirt Road Revival is available on Spotify and iTunes. Dr. McGowan was recently for consideration for the 61st annual Grammy awards in 4 categories for his song, “Sweet Talk”.

Dr. McGowan will be accepting referrals for Mohs surgery at our Bluffton and Port Royal locations.


Stephen Hammond, MD

Dr. Hammond is triple board certified in anatomic pathology, clinical pathology and dermatopathology. His immediate prior position was the medical director and head of dermatopathology at a regional diagnostic laboratory in South Carolina. He received his medical degree from the Royal College of Surgeons, Ireland. He completed his residency training in Boston University Medical Center where he served as chief resident in both anatomical and clinical pathology. He completed his fellowship at the renowned Ackerman Academy of Dermatopathology in New York City. He is the recipient of multiple national awards for both academic achievement and leadership. Dr. Hammond has authored numerous publications and has presented at national and international meetings. His specialty interests include melanocytic and non-melanocytic skin cancers as well as inflammatory skin disorders. In addition, Dr. Hammond is one of the few Medical Doctors in the United States practicing reflectance confocal microscopy for the non-invasive diagnosis of cutaneous tumors. He has several leadership and teaching positions in this nascent field and has been spotlighted in national media. He is an advocate of public health education and has written articles promoting understanding of pathology services in consumer media.


Frank Zurfley, MD

Dr. Zurfley is a board-certified dermatologist and ACMS fellowship-trained Mohs micrographic surgeon. He is a graduate of the Northeast Ohio Medical University. He completed his dermatology residency at Geisinger Medical center. During residency he was awarded the Compassion Award, an annual health system-wide award, for exceptional patient care. During his final year of residency he was selected to serve as Chief Resident and was awarded the Fred Miller Golden Curette Award, given to one resident each year for excellence in caring, kindness, compassion and equanimity. After residency, Dr. Zurfley completed fellowship training in Mohs micrographic surgery and dermatologic oncology at Geisinger Medical Center under the direction of 7 fellowship trained Mohs surgeons.

Dr. Zurfley is a member of many professional organizations, including the American Board of Dermatology, the American College of Mohs Surgeons and the American Society for Dermatologic Surgery. Additionally he has served on statewide legislative boards for dermatology and is currently a committee member of the American Academy of Dermatology Grassroots Advocacy Task Force.

During his free time Dr. Zurfley enjoys spending time with his wife and children. They enjoy anything outdoors but have a special love for the beach.


Audrey Green, MD

Dr. Green is a board-certified dermatologist. She is originally from North Georgia and received her bachelor’s degree from the University of Georgia. Before attending medical school, she worked as a Microbiologist at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. She went on to attend Mercer University School of Medicine in Savannah, GA, where she was inducted into the Alpha Omega Alpha and Phi Kappa Phi honor societies. Dr. Green completed her dermatology residency at Geisinger Medical Center in Danville, Pennsylvania.

Dr. Green is a fellow of the American Academy of Dermatology and is an elected officer of the South Carolina Academy of Dermatology and Dermatologic Surgery. She provides a well-rounded approach to dermatological care and practices medical, surgical, and cosmetic dermatology. In her free time, Dr. Green enjoys spending time outdoors with her friends and family.


Mandy Medlin, MSPAS, PA-C

Mandy Medlin graduated from Converse College in Spartanburg and earned her Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology with a minor in English. She then went on to earn her Masters of Science in Physician Assistant Studies from the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston graduating with the highest honors.

Mandy is trained and specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of all skin, hair and nail disorders as well as the prevention of skin cancers. She has been in practice since 2005 in dermatology as well as plastic and reconstructive dermatology in both South Carolina and Florida. She is from Camden, SC, and enjoys spending time with her family and two dogs.

Mandy is certified by the National Commission on the Certification of Physician Assistants and is licensed to practice medicine through the South Carolina Medical Board under the direction and supervision of Dr. Carmen Traywick. She is a member of the American Academy of Physician Assistants, the Society of Dermatology Physician Assistants, and the South Carolina Society of Dermatology Physician Assistants.


Heather K. Casalicchio, PA-C

Heather K. Casalicchio is a graduate of Franklin Pierce University Master of Physician Assistant program, affiliated with Dartmouth’s Geisel School of Medicine. She joins our team after three years of practice in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. She is certified by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA) and is involved in the following societies: Society of Dermatology Physician Assistants, American Academy of Physician Assistants and the South Carolina Academy of Physician Assistants. Heather enjoys evaluating and treating a wide range of conditions from skin cancer to hair loss, as well as, common conditions like acne, rosacea, dermatitis and psoriasis. Out of the office, Heather and her husband spend most of their free time on the golf course. Otherwise; they enjoy traveling, dinning out and spending time with family.


Emily Simpson, PA-C

Emily joins May River Dermatology after beginning her career in Savannah, spending time in general surgery as well as urgent/occupational care. She is a 2010 graduate from the Georgia Institute of Technology with a Bachelors of Science in Industrial and Systems Engineering. She then went on to graduate from Mercer University in 2015 with a Masters of Medical Science in Physician Assistant Studies. She is a member of the American Association of Physician Assistants.

Emily and her husband have fallen in love with the South Carolina Lowcountry and are so excited to call Bluffton their new home. They spend as much of their time outside and on their boat as they can. Whenever possible they bring their dogs, Veggie and Duke, along for the adventure.


Nicholas Cassel, PA-C, CWS

Nicholas Cassel graduated from Wright State University in Dayton, Ohio and earned a Bachelor of Science in Applied Physiology. He then went on to earn his Masters of Science in Physician Assistant Studies from South College in Knoxville Tennessee. He is board certified by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants as well as being a board certified wound specialist by the American Board of Wound Management.

Nicholas worked previously in neurosurgery in Duluth, Minnesota before joining the surgical team here at May River Dermatology under the supervision of Dr. Sarradet.

He is a former Navy Hospital Corpsman, and completed two combat tours overseas with the Marine Corps as well as previously stationed in Beaufort. In his free time, Nic enjoys going on adventures, wood working, aviation, spending time with his pets, and riding his motorcycle.


Jonathan Samaha, PA-C

Jonathan grew up in Augusta, Georgia and graduated from Augusta University with a Bachelors in Piano Performance and subsequently his Masters in Physician Assistant Studies.

Jonathan spent the first seven years of his career in Augusta, where he worked in emergency medicine, urgent care, and family practice. He developed a passion for dermatology and joins May River Dermatology after serving the Aiken, SC area. Jonathan has experience in treating a wide range of dermatologic conditions. He is a diplomate fellow member of the Society of Dermatology Physician Assistants and a member of Georgia Dermatology Physician Assistants. He enjoys spending time with his wife and three children and being outdoors, exploring and fishing. They are excited to call Hilton Head their new home.


Ansley Hiers, PA-C

Ansley is a Lowcountry native who graduated Summa Cum Laude from Clemson University with a Bachelor of Science in Biological Sciences. She then completed her Master of Science in Physician Assistant Studies from the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston, where she graduated with honors. During her time at the Medical University she did several rotations in dermatology, where she fell in love with the specialty. As a student, she volunteered at the Dream Center Dermatology free clinic, St. Andrews free clinic, as well as the MUSC CARES free clinic. She also went on a medical mission trip to Togo with some of her classmates.

Ansley is a member of South Carolina Academy of Physician Assistants and American Academy of Physician Assistants. She has a heart for missions and volunteering. She enjoys traveling to new places, hiking, and crafting. She and her husband have one rescue pup, Lucy.


Jeff Kristan, PA-C

Jeff grew up in Western Pennsylvania and graduated from Penn State University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Biobehavioral Health. He completed his Master of Science in Physician Assistant Studies from Slippery Rock University. Jeff has been previously employed in emergency medicine for 5 years and has always had a passion and interest in dermatology. He is excited to join the May River team under the direction and supervision of Dr. Traywick. He is board certified to practice medicine by the NCCPA and holds a South Carolina medical license. He has lived in the Lowcountry since 2021. Jeff enjoys spending time with his wife and three children, golfing, and fishing.


Heather L. Cain, MSN, APRN, FNP-C

Heather L. Cain is originally from Cleveland Ohio where she attended Cleveland State University for her undergraduate degrees in both Biology and her accelerated Bachelor of Science in Nursing. After which, she moved to the Lowcountry and continued her nursing career in a multitude of different settings which included Step-down, inpatient rehab followed by outpatient wound care. During the height of COVID, she felt she wanted to better serve her community and went on to further her education through the University of Cincinnati’s Family Nurse Practitioner program. She is board certified through the American Association of Nurse Practitioners (AANP) and is involved in the South Carolina Nurses Association. During her Master’s she had the pleasure of participating in a Dermatology rotation and is thrilled to be a part of the May River Dermatology family. In her free time, Heather enjoys the outdoors, traveling, and spending time with her longtime boyfriend and her dogs.


Kaylee Olszewski, PA-C

Kaylee grew up in Charleston, West Virginia and graduated from Marshall University with a Bachelors in Health Science. She later attended the University of Charleston (WV) to obtain her Masters in Physician Assistant Studies. She is board certified by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants.

Kaylee previously worked in orthopedic surgery in Charleston, West Virginia before joining May River Dermatology. She is involved in the following societies: South Carolina Academy of Physician Assistants, West Virginia Association of Physician Assistants, and the American Academy of Physician Assistants

In her free time, Kaylee enjoys reading, trying new coffee shops, and spending time with family. Kaylee and her husband have three golden retrievers who love joining their humans on adventures, whether it be walks, car rides, or the beach. Kaylee and her family are ecstatic to make Bluffton their new home.


Bernie Traywick, CEO

Bernie Traywick is the CEO for May River Dermatology, LLC. In this role Mr. Traywick oversees all financial and operational aspects of the practice.

Prior to this current role, Mr. Traywick served as Business Manager and Management Engineer for Perioperative Services at Emory Healthcare. He earned his Masters in Business Administration from Emory University and his Bachelor in Science in Electrical Engineering from Georgia Tech.

Mr. Traywick volunteers his time as a board member of the Boys & Girls Club of Bluffton and the Don Ryan Center for Innovation.  Two great organizations that are helping improve the lives of everyone in the Lowcountry.
